This is my personal story of grit, endurance, and survival through Special Forces Assessment and Selection (SFAS) and the infamous Team Week. If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to push past your limits, this book will take you there.

The Story Behind the Memoir

In August 1990, I stepped off a plane from Germany and into the sweltering North Carolina heat of Camp Mackall. Assigned as Roster Number 68, I was carrying a sixty-five-pound rucksack — ā€œThe Tickā€ — that never left my back. What followed was three weeks inside Special Forces Assessment and Selection (SFAS), a crucible that tested not just strength, but grit, brotherhood, and the will to keep going when everything in your body said stop.

This experience became the foundation of my memoir, The Week That Never Ends: Surviving SFAS. Twice I attempted SFAS. The lessons I carried with me through 22 years of Army service still shape who I am today.

What Readers Can Expect

This is not just a war story. It’s a human story. Inside the pages you’ll find:

  • Life in the hooch — long nights of foot checks and patching each other’s blistered feet.
  • The infamous Tick — our rucksacks that came with us everywhere, draining us mile after mile.
  • Team Week — brutal missions with impossible loads, where leadership was tested in silence.
  • Moments of loss and resilience — from the death of a teammate to my own collapse as a heat casualty.
  • The final road march — a test that stretched into darkness, with no known finish line.

It’s a short memoir, but one that captures the essence of what it means to endure, to fail, and to carry those lessons forward.

Why I Wrote This

For years, I carried these memories quietly. I decided to write them down not just for myself, but for anyone who has ever faced a test they weren’t sure they could finish. This memoir is the first of many — I plan to write more about my time as a RANGER, a Jumpmaster, and other chapters of my Army career.

Closing Thoughts

Not everyone earns the Green Beret or the Tab. But the lessons of SFAS — leadership, resilience, and brotherhood — never leave you. This is my story of one week that truly never ends.
